Melanated Vanilla came from a piece of history that hit me deeply. I learned that after slavery, Black people weren’t allowed to buy vanilla ice cream except on the Fourth of July. The rest of the year, their “vanilla” was butter pecan. Instead of letting that exclusion define them, our elders took butter pecan and made it their own, something to claim with pride. When I read that, I understood so much more about my culture, and I felt an even deeper love for it. I knew I had to make Melanated Vanilla. It tastes good, it feels right, and it honors the creativity and resilience we carry.
